Old permanent makeup can be handled in three ways: a cover-up (when the shape, colour and density of the old pigment allow it), lightening with remover, or laser removal. Remover and laser are not substitutes for each other — each wins in different cases, and they can be combined. Master Yuliia Krylova has worked with permanent makeup removal for 9 years; at her Prague studio she performs remover lightening (CZK 2,500/session), and if laser suits your case better, she will tell you so openly at the consultation. Photo assessment is free via Instagram @contour_kh.

When a cover-up is enough — and when it is not

Three factors decide whether a cover-up will work: shape, colour and pigment density. If the old work fails even one of them, a cover-up will never satisfy you: an unwanted colour gets covered for only a few months, a shape with excess areas is practically impossible to fix, and overly dense pigment won't let the brows become lighter or airier. Painting dark brows over with "beige" is not a solution — once healed, the old work always shows through. In such cases the only honest path is: remove or lighten first, then build the new shape.

Remover: biologically active lightening

Remover is a biologically active formula that stimulates the skin to push pigment out. It is applied with a machine and a needle — the procedure feels similar to permanent makeup itself and takes up to an hour. Remover works where laser is powerless: it handles beige, yellow, blue and green tones, and it can be used even on fresh permanent makeup. The formula and concentration are chosen case by case — two artists with the same remover will get completely different results: technique and experience decide.

Laser: the fastest route for dark pigment

Fear of laser — pain, scars, blood — comes from poor-quality work. In the hands of an experienced specialist the skin stays intact, and the removal itself can take as little as one minute. An example from Yuliia's long practice (from the period when she performed laser removals herself): a client had spent 12 years hiding and painting over a tired blue lip contour — it disappeared after a single laser session. Four factors drive speed and efficiency: the pigment composition in the skin, the age of the work, the density and the colour. Laser cannot handle light and warm tones (beige, yellow) — that is where remover steps in.

The methods can be alternated and combined — remover formulas, techniques, settings — with a single goal: reach the result as fast as possible. "Fast and effective" is the core principle of removal work. But removal is no magic wand: experience decides, so trust your face only to professionals.

How it works in Prague with Yuliia

1) Send a photo to Instagram @contour_kh — assessment is free. 2) At the consultation (CZK 300) Yuliia determines whether a cover-up is enough or lightening is needed — and by which method. 3) Remover lightening happens right in the Vinohrady studio; if laser is the better fit, you'll hear it straight, along with the next steps. 4) After lightening comes the cover-up with a new shape; leftovers that cannot be drawn out are hidden by skin-tone camouflage.

FAQ

Does old permanent makeup always need removal?

No. If the shape, colour and density of the old pigment are suitable, a cover-up is enough (from CZK 6,000). Removal is needed when the old work doesn't fit the new shape, has an unwanted tone or overly dense pigment.

Which is better — remover or laser?

Neither is universally better. Remover wins on light and warm tones (beige, yellow, blue, green) and fresh permanent makeup; laser on dark dense pigment. The methods are combined as the case requires.

How many sessions will I need?

Individual — it depends on the pigment composition, age and density of the work. Sometimes one procedure is enough; sometimes methods are alternated. You'll get an estimate from a free photo assessment.

Is removal painful? Does it leave scars?

Not when done properly: numbing cream is used and the skin stays intact. Fear of scars and blood comes from unprofessional work — choose your specialist by their results.
